Ganglion Cysts

What is it? Noncancerous lumps that most commonly develop along the tendons or joints of your wrists or hands. They are typically round or oval and are filled with a jelly-like fluid.

Common Symptoms: A visible lump, which may change in size. While often painless, they can cause pain if they press on a nearby nerve.

Our Approach: If the cyst is not causing pain or limiting activity, observation may be all that’s needed. If it is symptomatic, we may recommend temporary splinting or aspiration (draining the fluid). For cysts that are painful or persistent, surgical removal is a highly effective option to remove the cyst and its stalk, reducing the chance of recurrence.

Trigger Finger

What is it? A condition where one of your fingers gets stuck in a bent position. Your finger may bend or straighten with a snap — like a trigger being pulled and released.

Common Symptoms: Finger stiffness, a popping or clicking sensation, a tender nodule at the base of the affected finger, and the finger locking in a bent position.

Our Approach: Most cases of trigger finger can be resolved without surgery. We often start with rest and splinting. A simple steroid injection is highly effective at reducing the inflammation and resolving the triggering. For persistent cases, a quick, minimally invasive surgical release can be performed in the office to provide lasting relief.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is it? A common condition causing pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. It occurs when the median nerve, one of the major nerves to the hand, is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.

Common Symptoms: Numbness or tingling in the thumb and first two or three fingers, hand weakness, shock-like sensations, and pain that may travel up the arm.

Our Approach: Our approach We begin with a thorough diagnosis, which may include ultrasound guided median nerve evaluation. Our conservative-first approach explores non-surgical options like wrist splinting, medications, and platelet rich protein plasma (PRP) injections and steroid injections. If surgery is needed, Dr. Traverso is an expert in minimally invasive endoscopic and ultrasound guided carpal tunnel release, which promote a faster recovery and minimal scarring.
